The exhibit shows a medial view of the sagittal cross-section of the patient’s foot (including the bones and nerves) immediately following the accident. We show the severity of the open calcaneus fracture and the soft tissue injury of the heel pad. We illustrate the fat pad and all soft tissue from the midfoot to the posterior heel that has been destroyed, causing the patient to have no cushion between his skin and the calcaneal bone. We also show the nerve that was damaged. In the upper right corner of the exhibit, we will show a small inset of the bones of the foot medial with the fracture shown. In the lower right corner there is a gross view of the foot after initial damage with a degloving injury and an open laceration on the heel.
