Mechanism of Brachial Plexus Injury

This animation shows the sagittal view of a pregnant woman's uterus and the mechanism of a fetal brachial plexus injury during delivery. This mechanism occurred through the start of maternal forces (pushing and contractions) propelling the fetus down the birth canal to the +1 station. The physician then applies a Kiwi vacuum extractor to assist in the delivery. The fetus' anterior right shoulder becomes impacted on the pubic symphysis of the mother, causing stretching of the brachial plexus nerves.
