Shoulder Dystocia During Delivery

An animation depicting the sagittal view of a pregnant female's uterus during delivery with a fetal shoulder dystocia complication. Maternal anatomy highlighted in this view includes the uterus, pubic symphysis, coccyx, and the sacrum. During delivery, a vacuum cup is placed on the baby's head to assist in delivery until the head is delivered followed by a turtle sign. A turtle sign is a clinical sign to identify fetal shoulder dystocia. Once the shoulder dystocia is recognized, the mother is put in McRoberts position. The medical team then attempts to apply gentle axial traction and a Woods corkscrew maneuver which as unsuccessful. Suprapubic pressure is then applied and the posterior fetal arm and anterior shoulder are successfully delivered.
