The procedure begins with the insertion of the colonoscope through the rectum and into the colon, with advancement of the scope through the descending, transverse and ascending colon, all the way to the appendix opening in the cecum. After the colonoscope is fully inserted, the bowel interior is viewed on the monitor and the interior lining is inspected as the scope is slowly withdrawn.
